The Original Recipe
A&W Root Beer® is made with a combination of 13 roots, barks and berries, and blended in a slow, old-fashioned way for distinct taste.
The First A&W® Root Beer Stand
In 1919, Roy Allen started his very first root beer stand in the small town of Lodi, California.
5 Cent Root Beer
When Roy Allen first debuted his root beer, he charged only a nickel a glass. In fact, the “5¢” signs atop many of the old stands were as recognizable to customers as the A&W logo itself.

Root Beer’s Roots
Root beer traces its origins back to Colonial days when people used to brew it at home using whatever was available in the yard. Dandelions, black birch bark, and sassafras or sarsaparilla roots were common components in early root beer.
